Fall break is the perfect opportunity for families to take a break from school routines, enjoy some quality time together, and make new memories. Whether your family loves theme parks, beautiful fall scenery, beaches, outdoor adventures, or exploring new cities, there are plenty of fantastic destinations to consider.

As a travel advisor, I know that planning a family getaway can feel overwhelming. Finding a destination that works for everyone's interests, budget, and schedule takes time - and that's where a travel advisor can help.

Here are some of my favorite fall break destinations for families to consider this year.

1. Orlando, Florida

For families looking for excitement, Orlando is always a popular choice. Fall can be a great time to visit the area's famous theme parks, water parks, and family attractions.

Beyond the theme parks, families can enjoy mini golf, interactive museums, outdoor adventures, shopping, and plenty of family-friendly restaurants.

Why visit in the fall?

  • Theme park Halloween events

  • Family-friendly attractions

  • Plenty of resort options

  • Warm Florida weather

  • Activities for children of all ages

Whether your family wants a theme-park vacation or a mix of attractions and relaxation, Orlando offers plenty of possibilities.

2. Williamsburg, Virginia

For families who enjoy history, seasonal events, and a little old-fashioned charm, Williamsburg makes a wonderful fall getaway.

The area is especially appealing in autumn, when the leaves begin to change and the historic surroundings take on a beautiful seasonal atmosphere. Families can combine history with amusement parks, museums, and outdoor activities.

Don't miss: Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens Williamsburg.

3. The Smoky Mountains, Tennessee

If your family loves the outdoors, the Smoky Mountains are hard to beat during the fall.

Families can enjoy scenic drives, hiking trails, wildlife viewing, mountain towns, and beautiful autumn foliage. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge also offer attractions ranging from dinner shows and amusement parks to go-karts and mini golf.

Why families love it:

  • Beautiful fall colors

  • Outdoor adventures

  • Family attractions

  • Cozy cabin accommodations

  • Options for both relaxation and entertainment

A cabin stay can make the trip feel like a true fall escape.

4. New York City

For families who want a city adventure, New York City offers something for virtually every age group.

Fall is a wonderful season to explore Central Park, visit museums, see a Broadway show, enjoy iconic attractions, and sample foods from around the world.

Families can create an itinerary that's as busy or relaxed as they prefer.

Family favorites include:

  • Central Park

  • American Museum of Natural History

  • Broadway

  • Statue of Liberty

  • Times Square

  • New York's many family-friendly restaurants

5. Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. is another excellent choice for a fall family vacation. The city combines history, education, and plenty of activities that appeal to kids and adults.

Many of the Smithsonian museums are free to visit, making it possible to create an exciting trip without spending a fortune on attractions.

Fall family activities can include:

  • Exploring the National Mall

  • Visiting Smithsonian museums

  • Seeing national monuments

  • Touring historic sites

  • Enjoying the city's parks and neighborhoods

It's a destination where kids can have fun while learning along the way.

6. Anaheim, California

For families who want theme-park magic with a California vacation, Anaheim is worth considering.

A family trip can combine a visit to Disneyland Resort with Southern California attractions, beaches, shopping, and sightseeing.

Fall also brings seasonal decorations and Halloween-themed experiences to the parks, making the destination particularly fun for families who enjoy the spooky season.

As this is my hometown, I can’t recommend Anaheim enough.

7. A Caribbean Cruise

Why choose just one destination when your family can visit several?

A family cruise can be an excellent fall break option because accommodations, meals, entertainment, and multiple destinations can often be combined into one vacation.

Depending on the itinerary, families may visit destinations throughout the Caribbean while enjoying activities onboard.

Cruises can be especially appealing to families traveling with children of different ages because everyone can find something to enjoy.

Consider a cruise if your family wants:

  • Multiple destinations

  • Family-friendly entertainment

  • Pools and onboard activities

  • Convenient dining options

  • A vacation with less packing and unpacking

8. San Diego, California

If your family isn't ready to say goodbye to summer, consider San Diego.

With beautiful beaches, family attractions, and an abundance of outdoor activities, San Diego offers a great combination of relaxation and adventure.

Families can visit the San Diego Zoo, explore Balboa Park, spend time at the beach, or discover the city's many neighborhoods.

It's an especially nice option for families who want warm weather without spending their entire vacation at a theme park.

9. Chicago, Illinois

Chicago is a fun fall destination for families who enjoy museums, food, architecture, and city exploration.

Families can visit world-class museums, explore Millennium Park, take an architecture cruise when available, and enjoy the city's famous food scene.

The fall scenery can also make walking around the city especially enjoyable.

10. A New England Fall Getaway

For families dreaming of classic autumn scenery, consider a trip through New England.

Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts can offer beautiful fall foliage, charming towns, farms, seasonal festivals, and outdoor activities.

A road trip can be a great way to experience several destinations while enjoying the changing colors along the way.

Fall family experiences might include:

  • Scenic drives

  • Apple orchards

  • Pumpkin patches

  • Hiking

  • Farm visits

  • Charming small towns

  • Seasonal festivals

How to Choose the Right Fall Break Destination

With so many options, how do you decide where to go?

Start by thinking about what your family actually wants from the trip.

Prefer history and education? Washington, D.C. or Williamsburg could be a great fit.

Want warm weather? Consider San Diego or a Caribbean cruise.

Want a little bit of everything? A family cruise can combine relaxation, entertainment, and multiple destinations.
