Pro Tips on Cruises from a Travel Advisor

Cruising is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to travel - but only if you know a few insider tips. As a travel advisor, I help clients navigate cruise options every day, and I’ve seen firsthand how a little planning can turn a good cruise into an unforgettable one.
Here are my top pro tips to help you cruise smarter, not harder.
1. Not All Cruises Are the Same
One of the biggest misconceptions about cruising is that they’re all alike. In reality, each cruise line has its own personality. Some are perfect for families, others cater to adults, couples, luxury travelers, or adventure seekers. Choosing the right cruise line and ship for your travel style is key - and this is where working with a travel advisor makes a big difference.
2. Timing Is Everything
When you book matters just as much as what you book. Wave Season (typically January through March) often brings the best promotions, including onboard credits, free upgrades, or reduced deposits. That said, last-minute deals can work for flexible travelers, while early bookings are ideal for popular itineraries and peak travel seasons.
3. Your Cabin Choice Matters More Than You Think
Your stateroom can impact your entire experience. If you’re sensitive to motion, mid-ship and lower decks tend to be more stable. Balcony cabins are wonderful for scenic routes like Alaska, while interior cabins are great for travelers who plan to be out enjoying the ship and ports most of the day.
4. Always Fly in the Day Before
This is one tip I cannot stress enough. Flight delays happen, and cruise ships do not wait. Arriving at your departure port at least one day early gives you peace of mind and lets you start your vacation relaxed instead of rushed.
5. Don’t Overbook Excursions
While shore excursions are exciting, you don’t need to fill every port day with activities. Some of the best cruise memories come from wandering a port town, relaxing at a local café, or enjoying a quieter ship while others are ashore. A balance of planned excursions and free time is ideal.
6. Book Key Experiences Early
Specialty dining, spa appointments, popular excursions, and shows often sell out before the cruise even begins. Once your cruise is booked, I always recommend reviewing what can be reserved in advance to avoid disappointment onboard.
7. Watch the Small Extras
Cruises can be very affordable, but onboard extras add up quickly - drinks, Wi-Fi, specialty dining, and spa services. Beverage or Wi-Fi packages can be a great value for some travelers, but not everyone needs them. A travel advisor can help you decide what’s worth it and what isn’t.
8. Keep Ship Time in Mind
When exploring ports, always stay on ship time - not local time. This simple mistake is one of the most common reasons travelers miss the ship, and it’s a very expensive lesson to learn.
9. Pack Smarter, Not More
Cruise cabins are cozy. Pack versatile outfits, comfortable walking shoes, and don’t forget essentials like medications, sunscreen, and a small day bag for port days. Formal nights are usually optional, so pack according to your comfort level.
10. Use a Travel Advisor (Yes, Really!)
Many travelers are surprised to learn that using a travel advisor doesn’t cost extra - and often includes added perks like onboard credit, special amenities, and personalized support before and during your cruise. If something goes wrong, you have an advocate who handles it for you.
Cruising is a fantastic way to see the world with minimal stress - especially when it’s planned well. If you’re considering a cruise and want help finding the perfect itinerary, ship, or deal, I’d love to help you set sail with confidence.
Bon voyage!
