So, grab an iced coffee and let's get into how you can obtain your passport by the time you have your next vacation adventure.
Understand the Basics
Before diving into the application process, it’s crucial to understand the basics of a passport. A passport is an official government issued travel document that certifies one’s identity and citizenship, allowing international travel and re-entry into one’s home country. Passports typically contain personal information, a photograph, and a unique identification number.
If you've struggled with obtaining a passport in the past, it may have been because you didn’t know what was needed.
To apply for a passport, you will need to gather the following essential documents:
Proof of Citizenship: This can include a certified birth certificate, a previous passport, a naturalization certificate or a certificate of citizenship.
Proof of Identity: Valid identification documents include a driver’s license, state ID card, military ID, or government employee ID.
Passport Application Form: You will need to complete the appropriate passport application form, which can be obtained online or at a passport acceptance facility.
Passport Photo: Must be in color and taken with a plain white or off white background. Photo must have a clear image of your face, and no filters. Selfies are not allowed. Someone else must take the photo or you can use a tripod. Photos must be high resolution, not blurry, grainy or pixelated. Must be printed on matte or glossy photo quality paper and cannot be digitally changed. All photos have to be 2x2 inches (51x51mm).
Application Fee: For first time applicants, fee is $130 plus an additional $35 for the execution fee. Renewals are $130. Minors fees are $100 plus the additional $35. There are optional fees available for things such an expedition fee of $60
Once you have these essential documents, you will be on your way.
Locating a Passport Acceptance Facility
You will need to find the nearest passport acceptance facility where you can submit your application materials. Passport offices can be either passport acceptance facilities or regional passport agencies.
Passport acceptance facilities provide passport applications, review them, and verify the identity and citizenship of the applicants. Regional passport agencies offer expedited service for travelers who need their passports within two weeks or less.
Passport offices may be located in:
Post office
County clerk’s offices
Libraries
Other government offices
Ensure that you make an appointment if necessary and inquire about any additional requirements or specific procedures.
Applicants should check the latest services estimates from the State Department website since passport processing times may vary.
Be sure to bring the required documentation and fees with you when you apply for your passport. I cannot stress this enough. Double check everything and make sure you have it with you.
Application Process
After you have located the application office nearest to you, it’s time to start the passport application process. I know this may seem basic to you, but you want to ensure that all details are checked off.
1. Complete the application: Ensure that you are filling out the passport application form accurately and completely. Double check that all the information provided matches your supporting documentation. Review and proofread your application before submission to avoid any delays.
2. Submit the application: Once you have chosen the acceptance facility you can submit your application. Remember to bring the necessary document, payment for the application fee, and passport photos. The facility staff will review the application, collect the required fees, and administer an oath if necessary.
3. Track the application: It is important to track your passport application progress. You can utilize the online passport application tracking system provided by the issuing authority. This allows you to stay updated on the status of your application, estimated processing times, and any additional documentation requirements.
