You know what?
There’s a whole lot of misinformation on being a plus-size traveler, which is why it’s easy to feel defeated.
Being a plus-size traveler can come with its unique set of challenges, but it should never hinder your ability to explore the world and embrace unforgettable experiences.
In this blog post, I want to address the importance of confidence and share some practical tips and personal insights to empower fellow plus-size travelers.
Remember, your size does not define your worth or limit your adventures.
Before I learned how to be a plus size traveler, I tried every guide and article I could find. I learned that planning ahead and being prepared helped to be more confident when traveling.
You absolutely should NOT postpone traveling until you are ‘thinner’ or not go where you want to go based on what you believe others will think. Plan and prepare to have the vacation you want.
Now of course there are things one may be limited to due to safety or ability, but aside from that, you shouldn’t hold yourself back.
Once I finally started implementing these practical tips, I was able to travel more confidently and unapologetically.
You can do it too!
Read on for some beliefs regarding being a plus-size traveler, and how to turn them into your superpowers.
Embrace Self-Acceptance
Self-acceptance is the ability to accept both your strengths and your personal faults without judgment. We all have things we would like to change about ourselves. However, some people are able to accept them; whereas others fixate on them and become their own worst critics.
First, challenge your belief. After all, it’s just a belief and you have no proof that it’s reality (spoiler: it’s NOT!)
The first step towards building confidence as a plus-size traveler is to embrace self-acceptance.
Understand that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, and your worth is not tied to societal expectations. Embrace your body, celebrate your uniqueness, and recognize that you deserve to experience the joys of travel just like anyone else.
Ask yourself why you think you shouldn’t travel. Is it that you think only ‘fit’ people deserve it?
Once you have the answers, think about what it would be like to do the opposite. What would it be like to travel freely? Would it make you feel more accomplished?
You don’t have to take action now. Keep challenging yourself.
Plan Ahead
“I’ll look into that later.”
Sound familiar?
We all have a list of things we need to do, and in what order we want to do them.
But if you’ve been procrastinating on a specific task for weeks or months, it’s probably time to re-prioritize.
I know I tend to procrastinate, so I actively do what I can to plan ahead and be prepared. Being prepared helps me avoid the pitfalls of plus-size traveling and know what to look for.
While spontaneity is an exciting aspect of travel, planning ahead can help alleviate any concerns or uncertainties.
Research your destination, find plus-size friendly accommodations, and check for accessible attractions. This preparation will give you peace of mind and allow you to fully immerse yourself in the experience without worrying about potential challenges.
Do you really need to know everything about your destination before you tackle traveling while plus-size? Or is it that planning ahead will make it a more enjoyable experience with no surprises?
It’s common to want to put off planning. But you know what? It’s not going to change what you will face when you get to your destination.
Planning ahead just doesn’t include the final destination. It can also help you during the actual traveling to the destination, such as air travel. Knowing the tips of traveling by air can really come in handy for the new plus size traveler.
It’s important to take your comfort and safety into consideration while traveling by air. So if you need an extender, don’t hesitate to ask for one. Flight attendants are there to help you have a safe flight.
A tip I learned is that you can ask the flight attendant as you are boarding the plane for the extender, let them know what seat you are in. So if you are worried about others hearing and being embarrassed, or having to call more attention to yourself, this is a good opportunity to do it with less people around. Flight attendants are pretty discreet about the whole thing.
Also, many theme parks like Disney and Universal have test 'cars' and guides to let you know ahead of time if there may be an issue with fitting. Or if it would be unsafe for you to ride an attraction. Knowing prior to waiting in line, and being turned away can save you a lot of time, and embarrassment.
Planning ahead and being prepared will help you to make things go more smoothly and be aware of any potential issues you may be up against.
Dress for Comfort and Style
Dressing with confidence is more than just putting on the most recent form of fashion, it’s about liking what you are wearing and feeling confident. The way you dress can have an effect on you.
Choosing the right clothing for your travels can make a significant difference in how you feel about yourself.
Focus on comfortable yet stylish outfits that make you feel confident.
Opt for breathable fabrics, well-fitting undergarments, and versatile pieces that suit various weather conditions. Be prepared for the weather of your destination, and if able, layer your pieces.
Planning your clothing ahead of time, will help keep you from over packing. One thing that people don’t generally talk about, is how plus-size clothing takes up more luggage space, which makes it seem like we are over packing.
As a plus-size traveler we tend to pack with the ‘what if’ thoughts. Knowing that it's not as easy to just pop into the gift shop to pick up replacement clothing if needed. So to ensure we don’t actually over pack, we need to plan clothing ahead of time.
Mix and match pieces or capsule packing can be helpful as well.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with colors and patterns that reflect your personality.
And above all, make sure you have comfortable, supportive, broken in shoes. Nothing can ruin a good time like blisters or foot pain can.
Seek Supportive Communities
Connecting with like-minded individuals can be incredibly empowering.
Join online communities or social media groups that cater to plus-size travelers. Engage in conversations, seek advice, and learn from others’ experiences.
Having a support system that understands your unique needs and concerns can boost your confidence and provide invaluable insights.
Being able to share tips and how to avoid struggles can greatly increase a positive outcome at your destination.
Saying you don’t want to have time to join the community is really saying it’s not a priority. The truth is, it’s more important than you think, and can add to your travel in positive ways. You don’t need to be present and active in the community all the time. You just have to do it with intention.
I typically join online groups for either specific destinations, or certain types of travel such as cruises. Connecting with others who are also plus-size and sharing tips about travel does make the experience easier to plan for and enjoy.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions and share your concerns. It’s likely someone else has already been there, and they can share with you the ‘do that’.
Focus on Positive Experiences
As a plus-size traveler, it's important to focus on the positive experiences you encounter during your journey.
Shift your perspective towards appreciating the breathtaking landscapers, cultural immersion, and personal growth that travel offers. Embrace the joy of discovering new places and connecting with people, letting go of any negative thoughts or self-doubt.
Recognize that society’s stereotypes and prejudices shouldn’t dictate your travel experiences. Challenge any limiting beliefs that may have held you back. Remind yourself that you are entitled to explore, create memories, and revel in the beauty of different cultures.
Your confidence and self-assurance will inspire others and help break barriers.
Keeping a travel journal will help you keep track of your days and the positive experiences that you had. Whether you journal about something you did, something your tried, or an interaction with someone, you will want to have those memories to reflect back on
Time to Travel
It’s time to turn your limiting beliefs into empowering beliefs! If you find yourself procrastinating on being a plus-size traveler, think about what may be holding you back. We all have them, remember? It’s what you do with them that counts.
Being a plus-size traveler is an opportunity for self-discovery, growth, and empowerment. By embracing confidence, practicing self-acceptance and seeing supportive communities, you can embark on incredible journeys that transcend the boundaries of size.
Remember, your worth as a traveler is not defined by your body, but by your spirit of adventure and willingness to explore the world with confidence.
So go out there, embrace your unique self, and let your travel experiences become a testament to the strength and beauty within you.
